3 Aldi stores join list of South Florida grocers with coronavirus cases

APRIL 28, 2020 04:21 PM, UPDATED APRIL 28, 2020 05:51 PM

As the novel coronavirus outbreak continues in Florida, another major grocer told the Miami Herald it has had positive cases in its stores. Aldi says three South Florida locations have had four confirmed coronavirus cases.

Of the 53 Aldi locations in South Florida, two in Miami-Dade County and one in Palm Beach County have had employees test positive, according to the company.

“The health and well-being of our employees and customers is our highest priority,” an Aldi spokesperson said. “All of the employees are in quarantine and on paid leave, and we are doing everything we can to ensure they receive the attention they need.”

Aldi reported cases at these stores:

▪ One confirmed case at 15033 S. Dixie Hwy. in Palmetto Bay.

▪ One confirmed case at 3403 S. Congress Ave. in Palm Springs.

▪ Two confirmed cases at 8621 Coral Way in West Miami-Dade.

Over the past few weeks, Aldi has put into place safety measures for workers and customers, including a limit on the number of people inside stores, along with one-way aisles and floor markings separating customers by six feet. The discount grocery chain, which charges for bags and asks for a coin deposit on shopping carts, also put up protective barriers at checkout.

Aldi also is requiring all store and warehouse employees to wear masks or face coverings during their shifts. Also, before workers can start their shifts, they must have their temperatures taken and undergo a basic health screening.

Aldi joins Publix, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Marketplace, which have all reported coronavirus cases at their South Florida stores since the outbreak began in March.
